Markus obtained a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Lund University in 1999. He then shifted to life sciences and did a postdoc in bioinformatics and cancer genomics at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. He did an assistant professorship in computational biology at Lund University 2002-2007. Markus worked as a senior researcher at the Department of Oncology and Pathology, Lund University with a focus on breast cancer genomics for eight years before joining NBIS Bioinformatics Long-Term Support in september 2015.
